Missions Quotes

get your heart ready

“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” ~ Jim Elliot, 1927-1956, missionary martyr to Ecuador

“Giving is not God’s way of raising funds.

Giving is God’s way of raising children … to spiritual maturity.” ~ Pastor Wilkerson

“… begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.” Luke 3:8.

Since God can raise up rocks to become children, how much easier for the Source and Cause of all things to tap into His own resources to fund the reach of His gospel?

“Missionary zeal does not grow out of intellectual beliefs, nor out of theological arguments, but out of love.” ~ Roland Allen, 1868-1947, Missionary to China

“Jesus is Light. He goes to dark places.” ~ Urbana Missions

“Missions is not the ‘ministry of choice’ for a few hyperactive Christians. Missions is the purpose!” ~ Nameless

[Let’s try wearing these shoes. Put on this frame of mind and identity. This lady, speak from within her being and heart, said:]

“Life is pitiful, death so familiar, suffering and pain so common, yet I would not be anywhere else. Do not wish me out of this or in any way seek to get me out, for I will not be got out while this trial is on. These are my people, God has given them to me, and I will live or die with them, for Him and His glory.” ~ Gladys Aylward, missionary to China

Oft times a simple thought is the same in every era of time. Yet phased slightly more elegantly or cleanly presented by certain someones. Such as this quote:

“If we are going to wait until every possible hindrance has been removed before we do a work for the Lord, we will never attempt to do anything!” ~ T.J. Bach, 1881-1963, Missionary to Venezuela

“Two distinguishing marks of the early church were: 1) Poverty 2) Power.” ~ T.J. Bach, 1881-1963, Missionary to Venezuela . And we would ensure to add the third P … Persecution. Pause, repeat: Poverty, Power, Persecution, Perseverance.

“[Self-proclaimed] ‘Christians’ receive 52.6% of the global income, but spend only 0.01% on the unreached world (World C).” ~ according to Barret and Johnson, World Christian Trends

Youch!

“Only 0.1% of all Christian giving is directed toward mission efforts in the 38 most unevangelized countries in the world.” ~ Barrett and Johnson, 2001

About half … half of this our world … is yet unaware of the true gospel of Christ.

“‘Not called!’ did you say? ‘Not heard the call,’ I think you should say. Put your ear down to the Bible, and hear Him bid you go and pull sinners out of the fire of sin. Put your ear down to the burdened, agonized heart of humanity, and listen to its pitiful wail for help. Go stand by the gates of Hell, and hear the damned entreat you to go to their father’s house and bid their brothers and sisters and servants and masters not to come There. Then look Christ in the face—Whose mercy you have professed to obey—and tell Him whether you will join heart and soul and body and circumstances in the march to publish His mercy to the world.” ~ William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army

“No reserves. No retreats. No regrets.” ~ William Whiting Borden, who forsook a large family fortune determined to reach the Muslim Kansu people in China, and died on the way.

“All my desire was the conversion of the heathen … I cared not where or how I lived, or what hardships I went through, so that I could but gain souls to Christ. I declare, now I am dying, I would not have spent my life otherwise for the whole world.” ~ David Brainerd, 1718-1747, Missionary to North American Indians

“I love to live on the brink of eternity.” ~ David Brainerd

“We are debtors to every man to give him the gospel in the same measure in which we have received it.” ~ P.F. Bresee

“Is not the commission of our Lord still binding upon us? Can we not do more than now we are doing?” ~ William Carey, 1761-1834, Missionary to India

“Young man, sit down: when God pleases to convert the heathen, He will do it without your aid or mine.” ~ said in a scolding manner to a young William Carey … who thankfully DID NOT listen. Calvanism has always been Satanic.

“We have all eternity to tell of the victories won for Christ, but we have only a few hours before sunset to win them.” ~ Amy Carmichael, 1867-1951, missionary to India

If you have no tears and no bursting-of-soul upon hearing that time-fact, how dwelleth the Spirit of Christ within you?

“The saddest thing one meets is a nominal Christian.” ~ Amy Carmichael [NOM-inal means: Name-only, low action]

George Cowan, speaking on the topic of Bible translation: “I just hope no one will say, in Heaven, that they stopped before they came to my language.”

“The way you discover your gifts is really by serving not by searching.” ~ Loren Cunningham, founder of YWAM

“Missions is not just for missionaries; God’s call is for all.” ~ Ann Dunagan, The Mission-Minded Family

“Missions is practicing God’s presence until His passion compels us to obey.” ~ Ann Dunagan

Get around God.

“As long as there are millions destitute of the Word of God and the knowledge of Jesus Christ, it will be impossible for me to devote time and energy to those who have both.” ~ J. L. Ewen

“I have but one candle of life to burn, and I would rather burn it in a land filled with darkness than in a land flooded with lights.” ~ missionary Ion Keith-Falconer

Psalm 18:28, “For Thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.” … so that we might enlighten the darkness of millions more!

“I know enough about Satan to realize that he will have all his weapons ready for determined opposition. He would be a missionary simpleton who expected plain sailing in any work of God.” ~ James Fraser, 1886-1938, Missionary to China

“[The gospel] is a fire in the Spirit, fed by the flame of Immortal Love Himself; and woe unto us, if through our negligence to stir up the Gift of God which is within us, that fire burns low.” ~ Dr. R. Moffat Gautrey

“The missionary enterprise is no human conception or undertaking, no modern scheme or invention … It did not originate in the brain or heart of any man, not even William Carey, or the Apostle Paul. Its source was in the very heart of God Himself. And Jesus Christ, God’s great Missionary to a lost world, was the supreme revelation of God’s heart and expression of His love.” ~ Robert Hall Glover, missionary to China

“All the resources of the Godhead are at our disposal!” ~ Jonathan Goforth

“If you take missions out of the Bible, you won’t have anything left but the covers.” ~ Nina Gunter

“People are still waiting at the other end of our obedience.” ~ David Joannes

“I believe that in each generation God has called enough men and women to evangelize all the yet unreached tribes of the earth. It is not God who does not call. It is man who will not respond!” ~ Isobel Kuhn, 1901-1957, missionary to China and Thailand

“Many of us are missing something in life because we are after the second best, I put before you what I have found to be the BestOne Who is worthy of all our devotion – Jesus Christ. He is the Saviour for the young and the old. Lord, here I am.” ~ Eric Liddell, Olympic gold medalist and missionary to China

“The noblest thing a man can do is, just humbly to receive, and then go amongst others and give.” ~ David Livingstone, 1813-1873, missionary to Africa

“The spirit of Christ is the spirit of missions. The nearer we get to Him, the more intensely missionary we become.” ~ Henry Martyn, missionary to India and Persia

“It is possible for the most obscure person in a church, with a heart right toward God, to exercise as much power for the evangelization of the world, as it is for those who stand in the most prominent positions.” ~ John R. Mott

Every possible believer. Every possible platform. Exalt Christ altogether everywhere!

Two barriers to global gospel saturation: 1) Love 2) Preparation.

“Nothing so clears the vision and lifts up the life, as a decision to move forward in what you know to be entirely the will of the Lord.” ~ John G. Paton, 1824-1907, Pioneer Missionary to New Hebrides

“I have fully preached the gospel of Christ. Yea, so have I strived to preach the gospel, NOT where Christ was named, … But as it is written, To whom He was NOT spoken of, THEY shall see: and they that have NOT heard shall understand.” ~ Holy Ghost writing through the pen of Paul in Romans 15.

If Christ loves the lost … if you and I love Christ and you love the lost like He does, do something!

Considering the state of modern Christianity. All these rotting buildings. All this decaying flesh. All we need is the gospel. And the gospel going by love. Love causes preparation. Preparation is the key to saturation. Most of the marching horde that drops off the edge of this world into eternity at a rate of 180,000 souls per day is headed to the Christless abyss below. We are unprepared to share. We must receive and exercise Divine love. Love prepares. Love gets ready.
